Fall yard cleanup: the four tools that do 90% of the work

Leaves, overgrowth, and one last mow before winter. What to own, what to rent, and the order to work in.

The core four

A leaf blower for the lawn and beds, a string trimmer for the edges and fence lines, a pressure washer for the siding and walkways, and work gloves for all of it.

Work top to bottom and back to front: gutters and beds first, lawn second, hard surfaces last, so you're not blowing leaves onto a just-washed walkway.

Own the blower and trimmer, rent the rest

Blowers and trimmers come out all season, every year — owning the budget versions pays for itself by the second fall.

A pressure washer comes out once or twice a year for most people. If that's you, rent it. If you have a deck, siding, and a driveway, the budget models in our catalog cost less than three rentals.

Don't skip the boring safety gear

Trimmers throw debris at face height and blowers run loud for hours. Eye protection and hearing muffs cost less than the gas for the job.

Gloves with real grip matter more than you'd think — a vibrating trimmer in sweaty hands is how blisters and dropped tools happen.
